This has been one of the top questions that I have been asked quite often in the last few weeks. I thought I would write a post and answer that question.

Most cattle spend approximately 70% of their life eating grass (this can also referred to as forage). Some farmers use other feed along side of grass or hay. This could include corn, potatoes, and/or legumes as well as their diet of grass.

Our cattle spend 100% of their life eating grass/balage. We use rotational grazing during spring and summer months so they have fresh grass from the pasture. We also have hay fields which we use to produce our own hay for the times when the herd cannot be on the pasture. The wrapped hay bales are also be known as balage.

Grass finished means that the cattle marked to go to the processing plant eat specific hay bales to gain the weight needed to produce good cuts of beef. This is the way that we finish our animals. It does take a little bit longer but we think it is worth it!
